Brazen has inspired me with her cook book challenge. So I’ve decided to do a similar thing. In the interests of variety, I am aiming to choose a cook book each week and make at least one thing from it. I will attempt to keep interested in this challenge until I have worked my way through my entire collection. Note I said ‘attempt’. This week is Women’s Weekly Dinner Party Cook Book No. 3. More to be revealed in my next post. I have a gazillion WW cookbooks inherited from my Mum. I’ll never part with them whether I use them or not. I’m a bit sentimental like that.
In the meantime I leave you with two pies.
A vegetable pie inspired by Secrets of the Beechworth Bakery. Basically a lot of diced veg mixed into mashed potato in a strong shortcrust pastry. Hearty and satisfying.
A silverbeet and olive tart with parmesan crust. Light and tasty. Best of all it uses tons of silverbeet. Great for using up the never ending glut.
yes, mine is an attempt, we’ll see how long before i get bored lol
I think I’m as liable to forget as get bored. Worth a try though, it’s a great idea.
I’ve always found the WW cookbooks for parties/crowds quite useful as they allow you to cut out a lot of the thinking and planning, which is considerable when cooking for 10+ people. When I left Oz, I stuffed three of them down the sides my rucksack as way of stopping thieves slicing through the canvas to get at my belonings. It also meant I had some useful cookbooks! I still have them.
I have quite a few cookbooks and use most of them as I’ve been careful in the one’s I’ve bought. My preferences are for ones with, for want of a better description, good, hearty peasant food that use seasonal ingredients found largely in the colder, wetter parts of Europe as I now live in Scotland. For special occasions, I have a few Chinese regional cook books but it can be difficult to find some of the more specialist ingredients for these.
I occasionally miss the more tropical flavours you can indulge in back in Australia, but we all make sacrifices!
Stoneheads last blog post..Tattie soup
The WW books are great for crowds Stonehead. We are big peasant style eaters here too. I think you’ve made a a good trade off. I love reading about your crofting life. I mostly love that you make it work.
